    Floatation Therapy and Asthma

    Key takeaways

    • Floating is not an asthma treatment and there is no good evidence that it improves breathing or lung function.
    • Because stress and poor sleep can make asthma harder to manage, floating may support general wellbeing as part of a plan agreed with your doctor.
    • If you have asthma, check with your doctor first, bring your reliever inhaler into the float room and do not float during a flare-up.

Quick answer: Float therapy does not treat asthma, and research has not shown that it improves breathing. What floating can offer is deep relaxation and better sleep, and stress is a well-known asthma trigger for many people. If your asthma is well controlled and your doctor agrees, floating can be a relaxing part of your routine; keep your reliever inhaler within reach and always follow your asthma action plan.

    Asthma in brief

Asthma is a long-term condition in which the airways become inflamed and narrow, causing wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. It cannot be cured, but most people control it well with preventer and reliever medicines, a personal asthma action plan and by avoiding their triggers.

Common triggers include colds and viruses, allergens, smoke, cold air, exercise and strong emotions or stress. Managing asthma always starts with your doctor.

    Where floating may fit

    • Stress relief: stress and strong emotions can trigger symptoms in some people. Floating is well studied as a way to reduce stress; see how floating reduces stress.
    • Better sleep: poorly controlled asthma often disturbs sleep, and tiredness makes everything harder. Many people sleep more deeply after floating. See what happens if you fall asleep in the float tank.
    • Calm breathing practice: the quiet tank is a comfortable place to practise slow, relaxed breathing, which many people find calming.

These are general wellbeing benefits, not effects on the lungs themselves.

    What we do not claim

Some websites suggest that the salt in a float tank works like salt-cave therapy (halotherapy) for the airways. We do not make that claim. In a float tank the Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) is dissolved in water; it is not a dry salt aerosol, and research on halotherapy itself is inconclusive. There are no good studies showing that floating improves asthma symptoms or lung function.

Warm, humid air feels pleasant to some people, while others may find an enclosed space less comfortable. Everyone is different, which is why a cautious first float matters.

    Floating safely with asthma

    • Ask your doctor before your first float, especially if your asthma has been unstable recently.
    • Only float when your asthma is well controlled. Do not float during a flare-up, a chest infection or soon after an attack.
    • Bring your reliever inhaler into the float room and keep it within easy reach outside the tank.
    • Tell our team you have asthma. You can keep the door or lid open and the light on, and get out at any time.
    • For children with asthma, a parent should speak with the child’s doctor and with our team before booking.

Note: This page is for general information. Float therapy supports wellbeing but does not replace diagnosis or treatment by a doctor. If you have a medical condition, ask your doctor before floating.

Try it at Ōmni Space. Float Vietnam’s float rooms are at 16C Quoc Huong, Thao Dien, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), open daily 9:00–21:00. Book a float or read the float therapy FAQ.

    Frequently asked questions

Can float therapy help with asthma?

Float therapy is not an asthma treatment and has not been shown to improve breathing. It may support overall wellbeing by reducing stress and improving sleep, which can make asthma easier to live with alongside your prescribed treatment.

Is it safe to float if I have asthma?

Many people with well-controlled asthma float comfortably, but ask your doctor first. Keep your reliever inhaler within reach in the float room, tell our team about your asthma and do not float during a flare-up.

Is floating the same as salt therapy for the lungs?

No. The Epsom salt in a float tank is dissolved in water, not breathed in as a dry aerosol, and there is no good evidence that floating has the effects claimed for salt-room therapy.
