Floating for Pregnancy & Prenatal Health

    Key takeaways

    • Many pregnant women find floating a welcome break from the weight of the bump on the back, hips and legs.
    • Float in any trimester up to the end of week 35; the second trimester is usually the most comfortable. Ōmni Space does not ask for a doctor’s note, but talk to your doctor or midwife if you have any concerns or complications.
    • Floating is not suitable with pregnancy complications; listen to your body and keep sessions comfortable.

Quick answer: Many pregnant women float to take the weight off their back and joints. At Ōmni Space you can float in any trimester up to 35 weeks (we encourage the second trimester most), with no doctor’s note needed. Tell the team you are pregnant when you book, check with your doctor if you have any complications, and skip the sauna and cold plunge.

Why floating feels so good during pregnancy

    • Weightlessness: the dense salt water supports both you and your bump, taking pressure off the lower back, pelvis and legs.
    • Relief for aches and swelling: many women notice less back pain and lighter legs after a session.
    • Deep rest: pregnancy can disrupt sleep; an hour of quiet floating is restorative for body and mind.
    • Calm and connection: in the silence many mothers become more aware of the baby’s movements.

    Safety first

    • The first trimester is fine for many women; if you feel unsure, ask your doctor first. Many find the second trimester the most comfortable, once morning sickness eases.
    • You do not need a doctor’s note to float at Ōmni Space. If you have any pregnancy complications, high blood pressure or a history of bleeding, check with your doctor or midwife before your first float.
    • Do not float with placenta previa, pre-eclampsia, ruptured membranes or if you have been advised to rest.
    • The water is at skin temperature, not hot, so it does not overheat the body like a hot tub.
    • Get in and out slowly, use a pillow if lying flat feels uncomfortable, and end the session if you feel dizzy or unwell.
    • Try different arm positions: many pregnant floaters find it comfortable to rest their arms crossed on the chest, or to use a float noodle under the arms or neck for extra support.

    What research says

There are no large studies of floating during pregnancy (on our Evidence Scale: Early evidence). Its benefits are based on what is known about buoyancy, relaxation and stress reduction, along with the experience of many float centres and pregnant floaters. That is why medical approval and listening to your own body matter.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can I float while pregnant?

Most women with a healthy pregnancy can float, up to the end of week 35. We encourage the second trimester most; talk to your doctor or midwife if you have any concerns. It is not suitable if you have pregnancy complications.

Is it safe to lie on my back in a float tank when pregnant?

The water supports your body evenly, which many women find more comfortable than lying on a bed. If you feel dizzy or uncomfortable, sit up slowly and end the session. Ask your doctor if you have concerns, especially later in pregnancy.

Is the water too hot for pregnancy?

No. The water is kept at skin temperature (about 33–34 °C), much cooler than a hot tub or sauna.

Is floating safe in the first trimester?

Yes, the first trimester is fine for many women, though many float centres prefer to wait until week 14. If you feel unsure, ask your doctor first, and tell the team you are pregnant when you book.

Can I float on my back late in pregnancy?

You float on your back, with the salt water carrying your weight. Later in pregnancy some women find lying on their back uncomfortable; if you feel dizzy or uneasy, sit up slowly and end the session. Ask your doctor beforehand.

Does the Epsom salt affect the baby?

There is no evidence that floating in Epsom salt water harms the baby, and very little magnesium passes through the skin. Avoid swallowing the water, and ask your doctor if you have any concerns.

Do I need a doctor’s note to float while pregnant?

No. Ōmni Space welcomes pregnant guests up to 35 weeks without a doctor’s note. If you have any pregnancy complications, high blood pressure or a history of bleeding, check with your doctor or midwife first.
