    Floatation Therapy for Pain

    Key takeaways

    • Floating takes weight off muscles, joints and the spine while calming the stress response that amplifies pain.
    • Studies of floatation-REST report less stress-related muscle pain, better sleep and lower anxiety in people with chronic pain.
    • Float therapy works best as a complement to medical care, physiotherapy and movement, not a replacement.

Quick answer: Float therapy can ease many kinds of chronic pain, especially muscle tension, back and neck pain, by removing the load of gravity and calming the nervous system. Research shows meaningful relief for stress-related pain, but it supports rather than replaces medical treatment.

    How floating eases pain

    • No gravity load: in about 25 cm of water with roughly 500 kg of Epsom salt, the body floats completely. Muscles that normally hold you up can let go, and pressure on joints and the spine drops.
    • A calmer nervous system: pain is felt more strongly when we are stressed. Removing light, sound and touch lowers the stress response, which can turn down the volume of pain signals.
    • Deep muscle relaxation: warm, skin-temperature water and stillness help release tension that builds up around painful areas.
    • Better sleep: many people sleep more deeply after floating, and good sleep is one of the strongest natural pain modulators.

    What the research says

Floatation-REST has been studied for pain since the 1980s, mainly in Sweden. Kjellgren and colleagues (2001) found that people with chronic stress-related muscle pain reported less pain intensity, better sleep and less anxiety after a series of floats. Bood and colleagues (2006) reported similar improvements in patients with stress-related pain, and further studies have looked at whiplash-related pain with encouraging results.

Most studies are small, and results vary from person to person. The evidence is strongest for pain linked to muscle tension and stress.

    Who may benefit

    • Back, neck and shoulder pain from tension or long hours at a desk
    • Chronic muscle pain and stiffness
    • Pain that gets worse with stress or poor sleep
    • Recovery after training or physical work. See floating for athletes.

How to use floating for pain

    • Start with a series: 3–5 floats over a few weeks usually shows more than a single session.
    • Choose 60–90 minutes so the body has time to fully release.
    • Use a neck pillow if your neck is tense, and move slowly when getting in and out.
    • Combine floating with the exercises or therapy your doctor or physiotherapist recommends.

Note: This page is for general information. Float therapy supports wellbeing but does not replace diagnosis or treatment by a doctor. If you have a medical condition, ask your doctor before floating.

    Frequently asked questions

Can float therapy help chronic pain?

Yes, many people with chronic muscle tension, back or neck pain feel less pain after floating. Studies of floatation-REST show reduced stress-related pain and better sleep, though results vary and it works best alongside medical care.

How many floats do I need for pain relief?

Some people feel relief after one session, but research and experience suggest a series of 3–5 floats over a few weeks gives more lasting benefit.

Is floating safe if I have an injury?

Avoid floating with open wounds or acute injuries that are inflamed or swollen. For chronic or recovering injuries, ask your doctor first and move gently in the tank.
